Description:
Port Tower Complex is a vision of Karachi port trust which came very close to reality. The initial vision was for a 500ft tall observation Tower and restaurant that would give a full view of the city of Karachi. When an investor from Qatar came forward the project was changed into a Tower complex with the tallest tower being 1400ft tall. Later on the request of Shaukat Aziz the tower was rescaled to 1500 ft (To make it taller than Petronas Towers) but the project never materialized.In fall 2005 KPT chairman expressed an intention of building a 1947ft tall tower which would be one of the tallest buildings in the world. Recently, the President of Pakistan has given the project a push and it has been revitalized.

They are 2 renders that were released by KPT but it is still unclear rather or not these designs will be used by the new company.

Business Bay's Dancing Towers unveiled in New York

The design of Business Bay, Dancing Towers, was revealed at New York's prestigious Guggenheim Museum this week, as part of a retrospective exhibition on UK-based architect, Zaha Hadid.

The Iraqi-born architect was recently declared the winner of an international competition to design three iconic towers at Business Bay, the region's business capital.

Hashim Al Dabal, CEO of Dubai Properties said: 'Zaha Hadid's design for the Dancing Towers confirms Business Bay's role as a project that reflects Dubai's rapidly changing future.'

'The towers incorporate avant-garde definitions of functionality and form that will not only create a distinctive landmark at Business Bay, but also symbolise a new phase in Dubai's architectural standards.'

The bold design concept of Dancing Towers features a 'choreographed' fluidity that combines the three towers in one overall gesture.

Connecting the commercial, residential and hospitality sections of Business Bay, the three towers will share a common base, or podium, that will feature retail, restaurants and related amenities.

The three towers will be conjoined two by two, with the offices and hotel at the base and the hotel and residences at the top.

On Level 7, the floor spaces of the hotel and the office towers will merge to create a link to the hotel business centre with meeting rooms, office facilities and services for guests.

The residential tower merges into the hotel on level 38, for residents to share collective leisure facilities, including the indoor swimming pool and other amenities.

On level 65 of the hotel, the three towers meet again to share a panoramic restaurant offering spectacular views of Dubai Creek, Business Bay, Burj Dubai Downtown, and the Arabian Gulf beyond.

'The advantage of conjoining the three towers in one design is to allow people to live a full day cycle between the offices, residences and the hotel,' said Al Dabal.

Business Bay is Dubai Properties' 80 million square feet master development, located along the extension of the Dubai Creek. It aims to provide world-class environment and infrastructure for global businesses, as well as a self-sustaining lifestyle for residents.

well since the world is currently booming with skyscrapers with many over 300m, ive decided to just include skyscrapers 400m+.It was getting ridiculous with 2-3 being added every month. nearly 60, just simply amazing.
it was taking days just to update the diagram.
so ive increased the height to 400m (with spire). ive included projects 398m to roof.so now about 20 supertalls.
heres the first draft copy.as you can see i havent detailed alot of dubai projects (far left). ill update them over next few days.
any serious proposals (400m+ missing ???)
whats the deal with west pearl tower at 532m? is that for both or just one?
so many from china coming up but har to get info our updates.
btw is the jakarta tower uc?

Burj Dubai is now over 250m just short of SWFc which decided to rise after a month stagnant.The massive ICC in HK is now 500ft/150m high.

The Port tower will be 1,947 ft (593 m)[1] high. The height of the tower has special significance. It represents the independence year of Pakistan which is the year 1947.

The tower is part of a complex which will be constructed on artificial islands in the shape of symbols of the flag of Pakistan. Which are, a crescent and a star. It will comprise a hotel, a shopping center, and an Expo center. The tower will be constructed on the crescent shaped island. With a viewing gallery it will offer a panoramic view of city's coastline. When completed it will be the tallest building in Pakistan.

Al Rajhi Tower in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is a new $480 million USD tower announced May 13, 2006. Plans have been hatched for what is set to become the tallest building in Saudi Arabia. Designs for the sail-shaped tower have been drawn up by architects at Atkins.

Although its height is yet to be disclosed, Fahmy Roauf, engineering department manager at Al Rajhi BankÂ's real estate investment unit confirmed that it would be Â"the tallest tower yet in Saudi ArabiaÂ" and will be built in Riyadh.

Â"The tower is being built on behalf of the Al Rajhi family and will be used for commercial purposes,Â" he said.

Plans have also been approved for the construction of a new tower to accommodate the Al Rajhi BankÂ's headquarters in Riyadh, designs for which have been drawn by Skidmore Owings & Merrill, the architects behind the Burj Dubai.

The developer is International Development Management (IDM) based in Austin, Texas. The owner (of LVT and IDM) is Christopher F. Milam.

The height of the crown is 1,888' AGL. LVT will be the tallest building in the US and the tallest hotel in the World. The architect of the tower component is Adrian Smith of SOM (Chicago) and of the podium is Paul Steelman of PSDG (Las Vegas). The senior structural engineer is Bill Baker of SOM (Chicago). Hotel room ID and retail ID are RTKL (variously the Miami, Los Angeles and Chicago offices; led by Daun St. Amand in LA).

Structurally, LVT is modeled on the Burj Dubai (BD). It has the same architect (SOM), structural engineer (SOM), MEP engineer (F&K), fire & life safety consultant (RJ) cost consultant (F&G), wind tunnel consultant (RWDI), and many others. It is a tripod, which is the most efficient structural shape for a super-tall building. The similarities have already been noted to BD in the typical level plans. This allows the maximization of height with minimum penalty for structural weight/cost. It is also rigid with respect to both wind and seismic effects. Wind is the controlling force in the case of LVT. The LVT structure is composite steel and concrete for reasons of both speed and cost (whereas BD is all concrete). For a hotel/residential building, this shape also maximizes curtian wall area, minimizes view conflicts, and minimizes walking distances for guests. Almost all the resort hotels in Las Vegas are Y shaped (look at the various permutations on Google Earth). In a distant-relative way, LVT is the same for different reasons (LVT was driven by the need for structural efficiency). It's a happy circumstance that this shape is also the best for hotel/residential buildings from the user/occupants perspective.

LVT is 67% efficient top to bottom. A standard-height hotel tower would typically be 70%. LVT's efficiency (excellent for a tall building) was made possible by maintaining an economic aspect ratio (building height to total mass). BD, although elegant, is very inefficient in it's top 80 floors. It's non-commercial as a stand-alone project. The owners have the financial resources and a greater regional objective. LVT is a stand-alone investment and therefore must be physcially (and therfore economically) efficient. That being the primary variable to solve for, the consequence of maintaining a high on-floor efficiency at 1888' is a tower of 4.5 million gross square feet containing 3,975 rooms (also constrained by the owner so that 80% of all units had to be 620 net/salable square feet or less). In most markets a hotel with 400 rooms would be large. On the Las Vegas Strip, a hotel of 4,000 rooms is an appropriate size for a variety of reasons related to market demand, land cost and competitiveness. LVT therefore makes good economic sense in Las Vegas, and potentially Manhattan, but unlikely elsewhere in the US. It cannot be smaller (in total mass) and still be efficient, at nearly 2,000' AGL. Such are the constraints of the current state of the art.

As an aside, the height was kept below 2,000' to avoid compound FAA and FCC issues. There was no possibility to reach the height of BD (2,640' AGL = one-half mile) and remain efficient (we tried and it generated 6,500 appropriately sized keys) so a relavant height below 2,000' but above the Freedom Tower's 1,776' was selected. 1,888 is the year the Washington Monument was finally opened to the public, at that time the tallest made made structure in the world. Freedom Tower, in its third incarnation (the one that's being built) was designed by David Childs of SOM's New York office. Anyone familiar with the industry would also know the sub-text here; the unspoken competition between these two primary offices of the America's most storied architectural firm.

Internally, LVT can be thought of as being organized as three hotels stacked on top of each other. There are three double-height sky lobbies, each of which are served from the base by high-speed double-deck cabs. Check-in occurs at each of the sky lobby levels, not at the base (which has a parallel double mezz confirguration. The sky lobbies, represented by bands around the tower, sit above, and phycially adjacent to, the MEP floors. These MEP floors contain the elevator overrides for the stacks below, along with all MEP equipment for the stack.

Each sky lobby serves approximately 60 floors with five lower and five upper-zone single-cab elevators serving approximately 30 floors each. This organization allows the express elevators to drop away above the sky lobby they serve, and for the locals to share the same shafts in each of the three tiers (so there are three tiers, containing two zones each, for a total of six zones). This is an extremely efficient organization with reduces the core size to about 40% of what it would otherwise be. There are also two express double-deck cabs which serve the observation deck and roof restaurant, and two which stop at each sky lobby and serve the pool deck (roof of the podium). While probably less interesting to readers of this forum, the podium is also a work of art, both architecturally and economically. The podium consists of two primary elements, a large parking garage along the northern property line, and an open-plan casino/retail building along the southern property line. These two structures come together in the middle of the site, the divisor being the sheer walls coming down from the tower above. The casino, restaurant, retail and other front of house (FOH) uses are south of the tower, and all back of house (BOH) functions are north of the tower. All BOH functions roll seemlessly into the relatively inexpensive garage structure, while all FOH functions are contained in the areas south of the tower sheer walls in a relatively expensive structure. The ground floor is primarily casino, restaurants and high-end retail. The mezzanine and second floor is devoted to retail and supporting food service. The roof of the podium contains the resort pools. This organization is most similar conceptually to the Venetian. The large foot-print clear-span space required for the showroom and ballroom is on top of the garage. Placing them here eliminated any need to transfer loads, as the garage structure is already heavily stressed. The showroom and ballroom are on opposite ends, where both can be easily and effectively served by the required mass exit staircases down the outside garage walls and on to the street. The showroom and ballroom co-joint at TV and music recording studios which all share the same BOH areas and equipment; all courtesy of Patrick Berge at Sceno Plus in Montreal (rock stars).

Finally, at the groundplane, there are three large porte cochere's, one on the Strip, one on Paradise, and one on a new east-west road connecting the Strip to Paradise along the southern site boundary. The Strip porte cochere will primarily serve the casino, the southern porte cochere will primarily serve guests entering and leaving the hotel room tower, and the Paradise port cochere will primarily serve for quick access to the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) which is two blocks to the south. LVT will also be directly connected to the Las Vegas Monorail with the intent of making the LVCC a direct extension of LVT. Truck and servicing all occurs along the base of the garage wall (northern property line).

Regarding entitlements, LVT is located just north of the northern limit of the circling approach airspace at McCarran Airport. This airspace is the primary limiter of height along the Strip and does not impact LVT. There are other procedure-segments which are affected but those issues are not material and can be mitigated. LVT is, in a sense, in the zone of the Stratosphere. Importantly LVT is south of Sahara Ave. The Stratosphere is several blocks north of Sahara and as such is in a much less desirable economic area, and is within the City of Las Vegas proper. LVT is either physically adjacent to or in the immediate vicitnity of the four Turnberry Residence Towers, Fontainebleau, Montreaux, Echelon, Sky, Hilton Resort Residences, Allure, The Sahara, the two Turnberry Towers, and the Hilton Hotel. These are all projects which are either completed, underway or otherwise funded and represent $10 billion in new resort investment, surrounding, but exclusive of LVT itself, which will cost approximately $4.8 billion to deliver (inclusive of land and all softs) - about $1,250,000 per room.

The more development oriented reader will probably have already noted that there is no economic demand for a five-star resort of this scale north of Sahara Ave. or east or west of the Strip. And there is no possibility to construct a building like LVT further south due to the circling approach airspace cap. And there is, outside of possbilty Manhattan, little ability to activate the necessary capital due to the number of rooms created, which is derivative of maintaining an econcomic aspect ratio at this height. Therefore, in a very real sense, there is about a one-square mile area in all of the US where a tall building like this is achievable. And here it is. The market at work...

Design started on LVT in Jan of 2006 and is currently in advanced SD. DD will be completed by mid-2007 and initial CD packages for the foundation will be issued in the Fall of 2007. Construction of the foundations will start in the 4th quarter of 2007. Completion is expected in the 4th quarter of 2011.

Maki, 77, has been named by the China Engineering Consultants Inc (CECI) to design the Taipei Twin Tower, part of the urban renewal plan involving expanding the Taipei Railway Station and developing surrounding areas, Lee Shang-jui, from the Taipei city government's Department of Rapid Transit System (DORTS), told reporters.

"The Taipei Railway Station will be rebuilt so that it can link up with the high-speed railway and the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line linking the Taipei Railway Station and the Taiwan Tao-yuan International Airport," Lee said.

"In 2011, foreigners arriving at the Taiwan Tao-yuan International Airport will take the MRT line to the Taipei Railway Station, and see the Taipei Twin Tower when they come out of the Taipei Railway Station," he said.

The Taipei Twin Tower will be two matchbox-shaped commercial complexes -- one 318.5m tall with 76 stories, and the other 239.3m tall with 56 stories.

They will stand west of the new Taipei Railway Station which Maki will also design. Maki has called his design the "Gate of Taipei."

On completion, the Taipei Twin Tower will become Taiwan's 3nd tallest building after the 508m Taipei 101 and the 347.5m Tuntex Sky Tower in Kaohsiung.

One bidder for 1000-foot tower site in Boston

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino's invitation to developers to build an iconic, 1,000-foot-tall tower on the site of a decaying city-owned parking garage drew only a single bidder today.

Steven Belkin, chairman and founder of Trans National group and an owner of the Atlanta Hawks basketball and Atlanta Thrashers hockey teams, proposed a tower -- which after approvals may turn out to be Boston's tallest building -- with extensive retail space on the ground floor.

The Boston Redevelopment Authority issued a request for proposals for the Winthrop Square public parking garage site, at 115 Federal St., in May; bids were due on today. Belkin, a hugely successful businessman but not as of yet a real estate developer, was considered by many to be the one to beat because he owns a key adjacent property, 133 Federal St.

The odd-shaped parking garage, with a footprint of a little over an acre, is considered much more valuable if a building there could also include the space occupied by Belkin's building.

Belkin has hired Meredith & Grew/Oncor as development manager for his project, and he has been working with architects including the highly regarded Renzo Piano of Italy, who designed the commercial and cultural Centre Pompidou in Paris.

"Very clearly he's been working on this for quite a bit of time,'' said David I. Begelfer, chief executive of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties' Massachusetts chapter. "He has the land, he has the money, and without question he has the determination to build this."

Belkin pioneered the successful use of "affinity" credit cards, those tied to businesses or nonprofit institutions, and has started more than two dozen companies. He is extensively involved in charitable work in Massachusetts, including efforts on behalf of Harvard University, Combined Jewish Philanthropies, and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

Belkin also owns Belkin Family Lookout Farm, in Natick, Mass. He graduated with a degree in engineering from Cornell University in 1969 and received a masters in business from the Harvard Business School in 1971.

Menino surprised the development community in February by giving a speech in which he invited developers to think big, after many year during which tall towers were shunned in Boston. The 60-floor Hancock Tower in the Back Bay is the city's tallest office building.

The Algerian Ministry of Religious Affairs confirmed its decision Wednesday (April 4th) of Quebec-based engineering and construction company Dessau-Soprin to oversee the construction of Algeria's new Grand Mosque, which will be the third largest mosque in the world after Mecca in Saudi Arabia and Hassan II in Morocco. The mosque, to be located on the Bay of Algiers, will accommodate up to 120,000 worshippers and will have the largest minaret tower in the world at 300 metres. The mosque will also have several cultural and religious structures, a conference room, a Qur'an house, a centre for cultural sciences, three libraries and media centres, an amphitheatre, a laboratory, a 300-room hotel, a shopping centre, restaurants, green spaces and a recreation park. The initial investment is planned at $2.2 billion but according to some estimates the project's cost may surpass $9 billion. Dessau-Soprin will receive $22m for its services. This is a thread for Waterview Tower in Chicago. The name is the result from every residence having views of either the Chicago River or Lake Michigan, if not both, hence Waterview. It will be 89 stories and 319m/1,047ft and will be the new home to Shangri-La Hotel and Resorts. I believe the curtain wall for the tower will be blue crystalline glass and stainless steel. Upon completion, it will be the fifth tallest in Chicago. Thomas Hoepf is the architect and Teng and Associates is the developer. This project has been a long time coming and is my current favorite supertall in Chicago under construction/approved. It has been in the preliminary stages of construction as of January 05, 2006.

Korean Towers Aimed to be among World's Tallest

World's 3rd-Tallest Tower Planned for Seoul
Korea has joined the race of nations competing to build the world's tallest buildings in an effort to mark themselves as global business centers. Thursday, a ground-breaking ceremony was held for a 65-story (300m) tower in Songdo International City in the Incheon Free Economic Zone. When it's completed in 2009, the Northeast Asia Trade Tower (NEATT) will be the tallest building in the nation, two stories higher than the 63 Building in Youido, Seoul.

Built on a spacious 148,725-sq.meter site, the first 33 floors will house office space for multi-national businesses and financial firms. A hotel with more than 200 rooms and amenities will take the 34th to 64th floors. Finance Minister Kwon O-kyu said during the ceremony that the NEATT will become a landmark for Songdo International City and will play a significant role in attracting foreign investors.

If things go according to plan, the NEATT's status as Korea's tallest building won't last long -- a competitor, the Incheon Tower, is going up just 30 minutes away. Planned to soar to 151 stories (550m), Incheon Tower is due to break ground late this year and reach completion in 2012. The projected cost is W3 trillion (US$1=W937). When it's done, the building should be the second highest in the world, behind the Burj Dubai which is under construction in Dubai and set to finish next year. Meanwhile, another skyscraper is going up in Busan -- the 107-story Lotte World 2, which its builders hope to complete in 2013.

Equipped with high-tech facilities to support global businesses, the 300m 65-story Northeast Asia Trade Tower is aimed to become one of Korea's most prominent landmarks.

◆ The Sky's the Limit

The sky's-the-limit competition to build the world's tallest towers seemed to come to an end in the 1970s with the construction of New York's World Trade Center (417m, 110 floors) in 1972 and the 110-floor Sears Tower (443m) in Chicago in 1974. But with the completion of the 88-story Petronas Towers (452m) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1999, the race was back on again.

In 2004, the 508m Taipei 101 building in Taiwan finally exceeded the 500m mark and next year the Burj Dubai will hit 160 floors. Also on the way is the 101-story World Financial Center planned for Shanghai, China, and the 108-story World Commercial Center due for Hong Kong in 2010.

The driving force behind the competition is prestige: high-rises are more than architectural wonders, they serve as landmarks that represent to the world an image of progress and financial might. By attracting hordes of camera-toting tourists and powerful corporate tenants, these monuments proclaim their city's standing in the international community and its power in the global economy.

◆ Incheon Has a Long Way to Go

If its two super-tall towers are ever finished, the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) won't lag in the international building race. But the project has been slow to fulfill the ambitions of its planners. The total projected cost for developing IFEZ is a stunning W202 trillion, with 90 percent or more of that supposed to come from the private sector. However since the establishment of IFEZ in Oct. 2003, only a few businesses have chipped in for a total of W15 trillion, less than 10 percent of what is needed. Worse, only nine foreign companies are scheduled to move to the area, bringing along just W130 billion in foreign direct investment. If IFEZ is truly going to become the global power center that those giant towers suggest, experts say that restrictions must first be eased.

Al-Burj centrepiece set to dwarf Burj Dubai at 1,200 metres

The Al-Burj tower being planned by local real estate developer Nakheel will be the world’s tallest, according to those close to the project. Construction will begin later this year and form the centerpiece of the Madinat al-Arab at Dubai Waterfront.

The final height of the tower has not been confirmed but it will be taller than the Burj Dubai which is expected to exceed 800 metres. Companies involved in the project under pre-construction agreements last year have said the initial height was 1,600 metres but that was scaled back to 1,200 metres.

“The tower’s height is confidential but I can confirm it will be taller than the Burj Dubai,” says a source close to the project.

Nakheel has previously only said that Al-Burj will be one of the world’s tallest towers.

The piling and excavation package is due to be tendered soon. “We expect to receive documents in a few months,” says a local piling contractor.

The tower was originally conceived as the focal point of the Palm Jumeirah and known as the Pinnacle. It moved to Dubai Waterfront where it was renamed Al-Burj and received a major design overhaul (MEED 27:10:06).

The consultancy team is led by the UK’s WSP and includes Australia’s Van Der Meer Consulting and US-based Leslie E Robertson Associates. A US team of Pei Partnership Architects and Axis Design Group (ADG) completed the preliminary designs.

Two other kilometre-tall towers are planned in the region – the 1,001-metre Mubarak al-Kabeer in the Silk City project in Kuwait and a 1,022-metre tower in Manama, Bahrain.

Dubai: Burj Dubai, which is on its way to becoming the tallest tower in the world, could be dwarfed by another Dubai landmark, Al Burj, before its completion in 2008, officials told a Meed Projects conference on Tuesday.

"With more than 700 metres in height and more than 160 floors, Burj Dubai will be the tallest tower in the world," Abdullah Lahej, Emaar Properties director of construction, told delegates at the second Major Project Developments in Dubai conference, organised by Meed Projects, an online projects tracker. "We are now pouring concrete for the 17th floor."

Though it is unclear as to which Burj will eventually dwarf the other, one thing is pretty clear: Dubai will have the two tallest towers.

Following the launch of Burj Dubai, Nakheel, a Dubai-based property developer, last year announced Al Burj, which was initially planned to be developed on the Palm Jumeirah's trunk, where the Palm Trump Hotel and Tower is being planned.

Al Burj has been presented to General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence.

The location of Al Burj was later shifted to Dubai Waterfront the world's largest man-made waterfront development. However, its height remained a secret until yesterday as Nakheel did not want the public to speculate on it.

"At the moment, I can only say that Al Burj will be at least 700 metres tall and one of the tallest towers in the world," Robert Lee, Nakheel's director for development, said, avoiding further queries on its actual height, or if it would challenge Burj Dubai.

"Al Burj will be a mixed-use project with a combination of offices and residences. We are currently working on its design."

Construction officials are certain that it will be higher than Burj Dubai.

"I can't imagine anyone spending so much money to raise it up to 700 metres and not make it the tallest tower. It would be foolish of any developer not to stretch further to make it the tallest one in the world," said an official of a large contracting company.

"I hear, Nakheel is looking to stretch Al Burj to around one kilometres in height, that is 1,000 metres," said a participant.

Nakheel, owned by Dubai Government, and Emaar, a listed company, which is 32.5 per cent owned by the government, are two of the three entities mandated by the government to offer properties on a freehold basis to expatriates.

Together with Dubai Holding, the government's investment arm, they are rapidly transforming the emirate.>

The "City Of Silk" project presented by a number of Kuwaiti private sector companies based on directions of the Amir of Kuwait.

A number of experts and specialists from international consultation offices made a detailed presentation of the project's aims; a multi-purpose city accommodating aspects of economy, commerce, culture, residence, and entertainment and built over 250 square kilometers in Subbiya.

The city would include a resort, a 200 hectare desert preserve, and linked to Kuwait City by the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Bridge, as well as holding a free zone near a new international airport that would be linked by a new railway line and road and air networks extending to Central Asia.

The city would also hold a business city and an area for forums and exhibition, as well as cities dedicated for sports, culture, environment, media, industry, education and health.

Furthermore, it would include tourism centers, hotels, resorts, public gardens, spacious residential areas and a 1,001m-tall tower ( Mubarak Tower ).

The construction of "Silk City", as well as the construction and management phases that would extend over 25 years. They also discussed guarantees for total transparency so as to ensure equal opportunities for all and allow for the participation of the private sector within regulations.

Investments in the city were estimated at KD 25 billion, which would reflect positively on national economy and help diversity income, as well as creating 430,000 new jobs for national workers.

The project would also serve to create investment opportunities and attract both local and foreign investors, while creating an effective strategic partnership between the public and private sectors, as well as contributing to the architectural boom with a city designed to house over 700,000 people.

The city will be composed of 4 main districts which are:

1) The Financial District: will be located on the new coastal road and will be facing Kuwait City. This will be the CBD of the City of Silk and will be next to a new International Airport. The distrcit will of course contain the centrepiece tower, Mubarak Tower.

Mubarak Tower will be 1001 m high and will form the landmark for this new city. The tower was inspired by the 1001 nights story and the desert plant life. The tower will be composed of 7 vertical villages which will consist of hotels, offices, residences and entertainment facilities.

2) The Entertainment District: will be facing a channel connecting the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers with the gulf. This district will contain resorts, hotels and entertainment villages.
The district will also contain a sports complex, a centre for sports medicine, a sports academy and water sports which will be found all along the channel.

3) The Cultural District: will be located on the peninsula of the northern shore of Kuwait Bay. Over here there will be a centre for research and studies of ancient artefacts, a historical museum and an arts centre.
This district will be subdivided into 3 areas for academic, diplomatic and political studies.

4) The Enivronmental District: will be located at the heart of the city with an area of 45 km2. This district will be part of the Bird Reserve for migrating birds from Africa to Central Asia. There will also be an Environmental Research Centre for the scientific research of plant life and animal life of the region. It will also include an extended network of a university and a health resort.

The entire city will be surrounded by an emerald belt which will contain ponds, lakes and parks which will ensure that no one is except a couple of steps away from the emerald belt.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, has unveiled the Bawadi hospitality project in Dubai - a AED 100 billion hospitality and tourism development which will see the construction of the world's largest hotel.

'Strategically this development represents a significant platform in the development of tourism in the Emirate, in terms of growing capacity, and will confirm Dubai as one of the world's premier destinations.'

Bawadi will add an additional 31 hotels to the Emirate over the next eight years, nearly doubling the current number of hotel rooms in Dubai. Centerpiece of the development will be the world's largest hotel, Asia-Asia, which alone will provide 6,500 rooms, combining 5,100 four star and an additional 1,400 five star rooms.

Not only will the Bawadi project help to stimulate direct growth in the tourism industry in the UAE, but it will act also as a strong catalyst to tourism dependent industries such as MICE (Meetings, Incentive Travel, Conventions and Exhibitions) and the corporate travel business.

The announcement of this development follows extensive research into the dynamics of the tourism market in Dubai and projections over the next eight years in terms of growth and development.

The AED 100 billion investment will comprise a AED 30 billion investment from Tatweer in hotel developments and AED 10 billion investment in infrastructure. The remaining AED 60 billion is expected to come from investors.

The total capacity of the Bawadi development will be 29,200 rooms out of which 12,450 will be developed by Tatweer's 12 themed hotels, with a further 16,750 rooms being developed by investors through the construction of another 19 hotels.

Construction is shortly to get underway on British firm, Atkins, competition winning proposal for a new development in the Binhai New area of the Chinese port city of Tianjin.
Nicknamed "the pile of boxes" by the local Chinese population, the TEDA project was a competition narrowed down with six finalists from leading architecture companies including Chicago firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.
Atkins, who worked alongside Shenzen based Chinese architect KY Cheung, came up with a Koolhaas-esque winning design that consists of three towers, each made up of a series of blocks of eight floors that are stacked on top of each other just like the nickname.
Subtly rotating from the one directly below it should add a slightly chaotic look to the traditional glass slab. They will offer a mixture of office, residential, retail plus a five star hotel plus landscaping inbetween.
There will also be sky-gardens spiralling up one corner of each section of the tower of the towers animating the buildings with human activity. During the day they will prove highly visible due to the transparent nature of the cladding and almost beacon-like at night thanks to illumination within.
The buildings will be clad in glass curtain walling and are crowned with mesh-like blocks that house a partly exposed core and wind turbines providing green electricity. Taking the environmental element further the designs also use a groundwater based heating/cooling system.
The tallest tower will be 80 floors and 356 metres in height whilst the shorter blocks will be 200 metres and 100 metres tall respectively. Currently, the tallest skyscraper in Tianjin is only 238 metres high although the local TV tower reaches 415 metres.
Costing 4 billion yuan it is expected to be completed in 2009 - typically quick fashion for a building of such size in a country that doesn't hang around in their current great leap forward for modernisation.

AVIC plaza stretches along a major artery of Shenzhen, bridging the old downtown and modern city center. In the center sits a retail podium, which is sited diagonally to encourage north-south movement across the plaza. Flanking the podium are two triangular plots: on the northeast plot sits a high-profile office tower, while on the southwest are more secluded apartment towers. The apartment towers connect at every third floor with two-storey public gardens and at the podium roof. Atop the retail podium is the signature tower, which will be an important landmark for the city, its twin vertical blades registering a dynamic profile on the skyline. The China World Trade Center which will total 759,000 sm when completed will be the third and most important phase of one of the most prestigious developments in Beijing.

The mixed-use development will contain 1 super-tall tower, two office towers, a new office building adjacent to the Guo Hui entertainment tower, two apartment towers, an exhibition center, and a winter garden.

The project was won in a design competition, and the keystone of the design was the super-tall tower. The design of this tower is 81 stories and 333 meters tall, and is the result of a collaboration between SOMs architecture and structural engineering studios. The towers superstructure, which has to take into account Beijings seismic activity and high winds, is composed of structural steel with composite metal deck slabs. Diagonal mega-braces on the buildings exterior will visually underscore the strength and majesty of the tower.

This tower will contain a 5-star hotel and premium-grade corporate office space. On either side it will be flanked by a 150-meter-high office tower. Below-grade will be 4 levels 2 floors of retail and 2 floors of parking.

The construction was supose to start in 2002, and completion in 2005. But due to many poblems the construction started in late 2005, and its expected it will be completed in early 2009.

New Hong Kong Supertall Under Construction

A new 70 floor office skyscraper is underway in the former British colony of Hong Kong, the One Island Estate Center. Originally planned to be a mere 36 floors, the ambitious developer Swire Properties Ltd had the development substantially jacked up in height and redesigned by architect Wong & Ouyang.
It will contain 141,000 square metres of space and 59 office floors within the form that bares more than a slight resemblance to the also under construction International Commerce Centre in Kowloon.
Like that design, it has offset glass curtain walling and four primary facades that extrude at the top. The differences between the two buildings are found mostly in the lack of tapering in the One Island design and the curving corners that reduce the bulk.

The tower will stand over a new public plaza with a vast airy entrance giving the impression that it hovers above the ground adding to the 60 restaurants and cafes already in the area.
The supertall building which is reportedly 280 metres to roof and 308 metres tall to the tip of the faÃ§ade will be the 7th building in Hong Kong over both the 300 metres and 1,000 feet marks showing the Chinese territory has lost none of its appetite for building tall.
Completition on site by contractor Gammon Construction is scheduled for March 2008.

Following objections from English Heritage, and a lengthy public inquiry, London Bridge Tower was given final approval by
Deputy PM John Prescott on 19th November, 2003. Sellar have given PricewaterhouseCoopers (tenants of the current site)
notice to vacate their building and say they are still fully committed to the project. They have now secured tenants -
Shangri-La Hotels, who will be occupying floors 34-52 - and Transport for London who will be taking a large chunk of the
office space. It is confirmed that PricewaterhouseCoopers will move in July/August 2007 and that demolition of the
site will be starting immediately afterwards, with construction itself starting in 2008 and finishing in 2011.

Asymptote Architecture, the New York based architecture practice led by principals Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture, has been awarded the Millennium Tower World Business Center in Busan, Korea. The international competition was organized by the Busan International Architectural Culture Festival (BIACF) and sponsored by the Municipality of Busan City and the Solomon Group. The official announcement was made on January 25 in Busan after a unanimous decision by jury members selecting Asymptote's groundbreaking design of three separate tapered towers rising out of a robust and powerful base. The Solomon Group, a private Korean developer, intends to move forward with Asymptote's design for a 560m tall tower, which upon completion will be the tallest building in Asia.
Asymptote's design for the WBCB questions older notions of singularity and autonomy in tall building design being a juxtaposition of three distinct forms and the subsequent voids they delineate. This composition takes as its inspiration Busan's dramatic skyline and the spectacular backdrop of sea and mountains that surround it. The base of the tower negotiates both the site and city at the entrance level, transporting people up a sky lobby and garden already situated high above the city. Here three slender towers rise even higher gracefully tapering upwards around a spectacular central void garden. Through its formal and sculptural qualities, the WBCB towers afford a unique architectural expression and symbolic elegance for 21st century Busan and the region.
Asymptote Architecture, an award-winning firm founded in 1989 in New York City, has achieved global recognition for important projects developed for prestigious clients that include the Solomon R. The Torch, also referred to as the Marina Torch and Dubai Torch, is being built as one of the many freehold residential towers located at the Dubai Marina, which is opposite to the Jumeirah Lake Towers and next to the American University of Dubai. It is located on the same side of the marina as the Dubai Marina Towers and just two buildings away.

The ~345 meter (1,132 feet) high building will have a total built up area of 111,832 square meters (1.2 million square feet) and be elevated by 3 basements and a 4-storey podium block. The Torch tower will have 74 storeys and contain 658 apartment units.

The three basements and four podium levels of the Torch tower will provide car parking for 536 vehicles, while floors 5 and 6 will contain recreational amenities including a swimming pool, health club, gymnasium, cafeteria, aerobic rooms and sit-out cover seal terraces.

At 56 stories, Arraya is slated to open in 2007 as one of the tallest buildings on the dynamic skyline of Kuwait City. The 50 million, 500,000-square-foot tower is composed of two parts: a square glass element that rises the full height of the building and a limestone-clad mass that is canted at an angle in plan and in relation to surrounding street grids. The limestone portion of the tower recalls the established vernacular of the existing multi-use Arraya complex, which includes a 32-story, 300-suite hotel, conference and banquet space, a parking garage and a three-level retail complex with over 10,000 square meters of shopping. The iconic top of the tower, which is topped by a telecommunications mast, is sloped and angled to create a unique and memorable image for the entire complex.
