Another Dubai Megatall (with controversial design :)

There seems to be a competition underway for a new megatall tower to be built in DIFC (which is between the emirates towers and burj dubai). The first proposal was found a few weeks ago and is designed by Norr International who also did the emirates towers. Judge the height yourself

This second one is by Atkins. It's basically a WTF were they thinking type of thing. It looks seriously ill with spots, a bit of blood splattered here and there and a big massive tumor sticking out the side. Keep in mind they've designed loads of great towers like the burj al arab and the WTC in Bahrain which is one of my favourite towers anywhere so they're not bad architects. Why the hell would they propose something like this?

Altin said there were more proposals on display.>

Kuwait: Alraya Office Tower - 300m/56 floors (U/C)

At 56 stories, Arraya is slated to open in 2007 as one of the tallest buildings on the dynamic skyline of Kuwait City. The 50 million, 500,000-square-foot tower is composed of two parts: a square glass element that rises the full height of the building and a limestone-clad mass that is canted at an angle in plan and in relation to surrounding street grids. The limestone portion of the tower recalls the established vernacular of the existing multi-use Arraya complex, which includes a 32-story, 300-suite hotel, conference and banquet space, a parking garage and a three-level retail complex with over 10,000 square meters of shopping. The iconic top of the tower, which is topped by a telecommunications mast, is sloped and angled to create a unique and memorable image for the entire complex.

BUSAN: Lotte World Tower - 510m/107 floors (Approved)

I've never seen a thread for this supertall even though it's higher than SWFC and Union Square phase 7. This is supposed to be under construction so I posted it here but am not entirely sure. Maybe it's on hold or what? Does anyone have any info because it seems this one's been forgotten.

Anyone know anything about this tower?>

DUBAI: Ahmed Abdul Rahim Al Attar Tower - 301m/76 floors (U/C)

The name is likely to change once the tower is done

But since this one is supertall and also well underway, i decided it deserves its own thread as well.

Also, they put the new render in place which looks very good.

So there we go:

SAN FRANCISCO: "two 1, 200-foot towers, two 900-foot structures" proposed

Proposal to build two massive towers in SF
- John King, Chronicle Urban Design Writer
Thursday, December 21, 2006

(12-21) 15:01 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- Developers have filed a proposal to erect the nation's tallest buildings outside of New York and Chicago - a pair of slender San Francisco towers that would climb 350 feet higher than the Transamerica Pyramid.

The plan, filed today with the city's planning department, envisions a cluster of unusually thin high-rises spread across two acres at the northwest corner of First and Mission streets: two 1, 200-foot towers, two 900-foot structures and a 600-foot companion.

Down on the ground would be an open plaza, covered passageways and two small existing buildings.

By comparison, the Transamerica Pyramid is 853 feet high and the Bank of America building is 779 feet. The only buildings in the United States of greater height than what is proposed for San Francisco are Sears Tower in Chicago and New York's Empire State Building.

Today's filing is an application to start the environmental review process, rather than a formal design unveiling. By the time that occurs, the heights and dimensions of the towers could change.

The lead architect for the project is Renzo Piano, who also is doing the new home of the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park.

"It is highly conceptual at this point," Mark Solit, a member of the development team, said of the project. "Conceptual in terms of our discussion with the city, and conceptual in terms of Renzo Piano Building Workshop's vision of what they think might be appropriate."
